Skyfire Festival

The Nevriset B'Xhadari, roughly translated as the Honored Heavenly Skyfire Festival, or just Skyfire Festival for short, is an ancient Haddu tradition stemming from the days long before the formation of the Alurizan Reserve.

The name comes from the B'Haddu name for the sky, B'Xhadara, "The Honorable Heavens", and the Xha Nevri, or "Skyfire", an abundant phosphorescent mineral that has long been associated with the sky.

The indigenous Haddu are a nocturnal people and, thus, live their lives in the nighttime and dark underground caves. The holiday tradition begins at sunset with feasts, games, and revelry in the dying light. As nighttime falls, the fires are banked down to coals and things quiet down as people settle down into groups to observe the night sky. Traditional stories are shared by elders and teachers, songs and music are performed, and audio dramas are played out by actors as audiences lay out to watch the constellations and shooting stars while listening to tales unfold. Almost like a human’s music festival, one can move through the night to find other groups sharing other kinds of stories, with snacks, treats, and games along the way. The celebration ends as the sky lightens before dawn, as everyone heads off to bed.

While the name is often localized as simply the "Skyfire Festival", native Haddu speakers will find themselves actively transliterating the individual parts of the festival's name as "Sky" and "glow" respectively, while debating the best way to try to convey the "B'" honorific from their language. Many choose simpler words for brevity, while other philosophies argue that simpler translations lack the poetry and reverence of the original Haddu language.

Lore questions

★ Who are the Haddu?

Haddu are reptile-like aliens. They are short and sturdy creatures, with thick legs, tails, and heads and smaller arms with highly dexterous digits that they used for writing, carving, and creating ornate jewelry. They have all-dark eyes much like a Hollow Xero, and their flat backs and tail are covered with overlapping armored scales, similar to an Earthen armadillo or isopod. Much like those Earth species, they can also roll into an armor-like ball, protecting their delicate arms and large brains. Along with their incredible night vision, they also have an extremely keen mole-like nose and sensitive antennae to help them navigate nighttime environments and dark tunnels. They evolved from a lizard-like ancestor many millions of years ago. As their brains evolved to get larger and larger, they honed their protective skills and dexterous hands to begin recording knowledge by clawing and marking rock cave walls. This allowed for more complicated language and tool use to evolve, and the Haddus grew to the culture they have today.

★ What is a Skyfire stone ?

The Skyfire stones are precious gems found only in B'Haddu. The abundance of localized groundwater allowed these unique, phosphorescent, crystallline structures to flourish. They are mined seasonally, and cave tours are available to the public too. The Haddu once believed that the Skyfire stones were left here by the stars, but with modern advancements showing Owai-6 as thier true orgins, this origin story is all-but left to fables.

★ What is the Skyfire jewelry set for?

The Skyfire Columbina, Collar, and Band are used during an ancient traditional dance called the "Midnight Ensemble". Although this dance takes place during the darkest hour of night, the Skyfire stones embedded in the jewelry pieces allow the performers to be seen from the farthest seats of the caldera. The glow of these ornamental costumes makes the wearer appear as if they are living embodiments of the cosmos.

★ The Midnight Ensamble?

The Haddu participate in an ancient tradition called the "Midnight Ensemble". This dance tells the story of how the stars guided the Haddu across the desert to settle in B'Haddu. Historically the Haddu believed the stars to be living beings, just like them, who had the ability to teach them secrets about their world. The Midnight Ensemble is a display of gratitude from the Haddu to the stars, a symbol of their everlasting friendship and a promise for continued their prosperity.
